When Good Things Go Bad

Once upon a time, there was a political party in this country that stood for progressive government activism, the value of the individual, free speech, women’s rights, and racial equality, and embraced the philosophical ideals of Thomas Jefferson. It’s hard to imagine the Republicans of today calling for western lands to be given away fre of charge to settlers – although given the low grazing fees charged by the Bush administration on federal lands in the west, and the national forest giveaways, maybe not so hard. Anyway, a big “Happy Birthday” to the Republican Party, first organized in Ripon, Wisconsin, on February 28, 1854.
