Better Late Than Ever, The Final Kitchen Remodel Pictures

I know, I know, I promised these months ago.  They fell victim to yet another blog hibernation.  But it’s time to wrap up the remodel project, so now I give you the end result.  And yes, we’re very, very pleased with the result.  Remodeling the kitchen has completely transformed our house, and we love it.  Let’s start at the beginning, just for a little perspective:

And here’s where we ended up:

To give you a little perspective, the refrigerator is roughly where it was before. Click on the photo to see a larger picture. Here’s a slightly different shot, showing the island:

This is looking towards the front of the house, down what was before a long, dark hallway, where the washer and dryer had a little enclave. Now it’s a shorter, brighter hallway, flanked by those great cabinets:

And here’s our great new sink area:

This laundry area was once basically our entire kitchen!

And the washer and dryer, now no longer in the middle of the house, vented right through the outside wall (clothes dry much faster!)

In the end, it took a little longer than expected – closer to 8 weeks than 6 – and cost a little more than planned, but not much, and most of this was due to decisions we made that we knew would inflate the cost. But it was still only about 10-12% over the estimate. And as I said, we love our new kitchen. Really, we love our new house!

Yes, The Kitchen Is Finished

And no, I don’t have final pictures.  We decided to strip the wallpaper from the dining room, which the kitchen now opens into, and I can’t get good pictures without having some of the dining room in view.  But I know a few people have waited for pictures, and they really, really are coming.

I’ve finally found time to start working in the yard and garden a little.  So far, it’s been mostly weeding and dividing some perennials that had grown out of their allotted space – achillea, crocosmia, daylilies for the most part.  And I’m moving chrysanthemums from the large pots and raised bed they’ve inhabited, to flower beds around the yard.  Time for new stuff in those pots.  Gardening season is well underway here, with temperatures in the 80s and the last frost weeks ago.  Fortunately, Mississippi has a long growing season (too long, sometimes – tomatoes in November gets boring), so I have plenty of time.  After all, Good Friday is still three days away!

Long Time Since An Update

Wow, the entire month of March with no update.  I didn’t realize it had been that long.  We’re 99.99999% complete, but the one visible thing remaining is about a half-inch gap on the ceiling vent in the middle of the kitchen – the vent cover doesn’t quite cover the vent.  They’re supposed to be taking care of that today.  That’s why I haven’t taken the final pictures – it’s hard to get an angle that doesn’t show the gap.  In the meantime, we decided to remove the wallpaper in the dining room, which isn’t letting go without a fight.  And I decided to raise the porch ceiling in front, so that’s another small project that isn’t done yet.  This weekend, I hope.  Final pictures coming very soon, I promise.

Yeah, big gap since the last update, but things have still been moving along nicely, just not big noticeable things. But the painters were in last week, and after a last-minute change to get a better shade of green, we have:

The island should get its granite Wednesday. I think we’re in the final week!

And the new kitchen is definitely taking shape. Cabinets will hopefully be ready for the painters after tomorrow.

The new window will hopefully be installed tomorrow, the farmhouse sink will go underneath.

Looking across the island to the nook for the new range.

Looking towards the new laundry room.

The new pantry cabinets.

The new laundry room. It’s hard to believe that this space was half of our old kitchen!
